Action Now - Pro-Life Activities and Projects

< < Return to Catholic Teachings & Church Politics Index

  1. Sponsor a poster contest for the youth of your parish. Choose a pro-life theme like Respect Life or Choose Life or Everyone Deserves a Chance at Life. Award ribbons or prizes for the top winners. Other options are a cutest baby photograph contest (get those parents' cameras clicking!) or a high school essay contest on the topic Why I am pro-life. Send the winning essays to the local newspaper.
  2. Have a clothing and food drive for a crisis pregnancy help center.
  3. Donate a set of life-sized fetal models for education to a crisis pregnancy help center. Also, find out the specific needs of the center and seek to fulfill those.
  4. Donate a set of pro-life hard-bound books to your local public library and church library.
  5. Organize a monthly group to pray the rosary outside an abortion clinic or abortion-providing hospital.
  6. Sponsor a pro-life newspaper or radio advertisement. (Organizations listed above can help)
  7. Sponsor a booth at your local 4-H county fair.
  8. Work with other local pro-life groups on worthy joint projects.
  9. Sponsor a Life Chain at various points in your city.
  10. Start a newsletter. Include a section for prayer intentions and actions to be taken. Include addresses of your Congressmen and information on pending legislation, if possible.
  11. Invite and sponsor a pro-life speaker to your parish for adults or youth.
  12. Keep your parish bookshelf filled with pamphlets on Church teaching regarding sexuality, crisis pregnancy help, post abortive stress syndrome, Natural Family Planning, and chastity.
  13. Put up a pro-life billboard. (It's not as hard as you think and doesn't cost as much as you might expect.)
  14. Sell Christmas cards, candy, holiday wreaths, or your organization's own cook book to earn money for your projects. Have a bake sale, a salad luncheon, a garage sale. Wash cars. Sell barbecued chicken. Use your imagination to think of creative ways to earn money.
  15. Distribute and use pro-life bumper stickers, decals and stickers for your outgoing mail.
  16. Write letters to the editors of your newspapers, and to your Congressmen and other elected officials.
  17. Give out roses on Mother's Day with a pro-life message attached to the stems. ("Thanks for choosing life, Mom." is nice).
  18. Sponsor a Father's Day breakfast to thank dads for their provision of their families.
  19. Plan a group trip to Washington, D.C. for the annual March for Life.
  20. Take Our Lady of Guadalupe as your patron. Propagate devotion to her and the Holy Rosary.
  21. Sell t-shirts.
  22. Bring meals to new mothers.
  23. Ask your pastor if you can plant a small flower garden (roses are nice), and erect a small cross, statue or plaque on a corner of the church property in memory of aborted children. Solicit volunteers to tend to this garden on a regular basis.
  24. Spiritually adopt a preborn child and encourage other parishioners to do so as well. Pass out holy cards with the spiritual adoption prayer on one side and an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the other side. Do this after all Masses on Dec. 12, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
  25. Find out if your local chapter of Catholic Charities will speak to interested parishioners one night on the adoption process. Serve refreshments.
  26. Take advantage of dates that are especially suited to pro-life activities. Plan events around these dates. Such dates include:
    • Feast of the Annunciation of Our Lord (March 25)
    • Feast of the Birth of Our Lord (Christmas, Dec. 25)
    • Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec.12)
    • Feast of the Holy Innocents (Dec. 28)
    • Feast of the Holy Family (Sunday after Christmas)
    • Mother's Day
    • Father's Day
  27. Send representatives from your group to a pro-life conference. When they return, have a meeting so they can share what they've learned.
  28. Involve the youth of your parish and train them so they will be able to take over.
