The Crusade for the Defense of our Catholic Church, a project of American Life League, has unveiled its newest public service ad. "Al Sharpton is NOT a Catholic Priest" is part of an ongoing effort to bring attention to recent abuse of the Catholic Church's longstanding pro-life position created by pastors sharing their pulpits with openly pro-abortion public figures. The full-page advertisement appears in today's Washington Times. It will also run in the Washington Times Weekly Edition and several other newspapers in the coming days. "Canon Law 767 clearly states that the homily given at a Catholic Mass is to be delivered by a Catholic priest or deacon," said Judie Brown, American Life League president. "It is an outrage that Al Sharpton was allowed to give a 'homily' at St. Sabina's Catholic Church in Chicago. He is not a member of the Catholic clergy and, for that matter, he is not pro-life. "Most disappointing was the fact that Cardinal Francis George, the archbishop of Chicago, did not exercise his power to put a stop to this atrocity," said Brown. "It is never a 'futile gesture,' as Cardinal George suggested, to stand up for the law of the Church and the lives of innocent unborn children. As a public service and to avoid similar situations in the future, we have sent a copy of this ad to all of the Catholic bishops and cardinals in the United States so they will be encouraged to stop such a miscarriage of justice from happening in their dioceses." Sharpton, like the five other Democrats seeking their party's presidential nomination -- Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.), Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) and former Gov. Howard Dean (D-Vt.) -- recently spoke at the National Abortion Rights Action League's Roe v. Wade anniversary dinner and pledged to be 100% pro-abortion if elected. In addition to a prominent picture of Al Sharpton below the page header "Special Alert to Cardinals, Bishops and all Roman Catholic Clergy," the ad also contains the pictures of the five other Democratic presidential contenders and explains why they too, cannot give homilies in Catholic churches. Release issued: 13 Feb 03
