From November 10 – 13, almost 300 U.S. Bishops will attend their annual meeting at the Washington, D.C. Hyatt Hotel on New Jersey Avenue. That’s just four short blocks from the Capitol building where at least 71 members of Congress openly, frequently and even proudly support legalized abortion—even though they claim to be Catholic. Last January, Pope John Paul II took the remarkable step of approving a specific message that Catholic politicians “have a grave and clear obligation to oppose any law that attacks human life. For them, as for every Catholic, it is impossible to promote such laws or to vote for them.” Shortly before He was crucified, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, told His followers that a good shepherd will leave the flock behind and search until he finds the one lamb who is lost. During their four days in D.C., the Bishops have a unique opportunity to follow the example of Christ and the exhortation of the Holy Father by informing the 71 “Catholic” members of Congress that their support of legalized abortion removes them from communion with the Church. Every day in America, over 3,500 babies in the womb are killed by surgical abortion. For persons professing any faith, this slaughter is difficult to justify. But for those professing to be Catholic, it’s impossible.
